Janel Waldschmidt is one of our Pilates instructors here at American’s Best Karate. At the age of 17 years old, she fell 42 feet into a ravine. The impact fractured her lumbar 1-5, pelvis, hip and completely shattered the lumbar 2. Two surgeries later, she was left with a fused lumbar. She was told that she would be “Lucky” to be in constant pain and would lack the ability to walk properly. She then found Pilates, and is now pain free. Not only does Janel have the ability to walk, but she was able to have a normal pregnancy “twice”, which the doctor stated would be impossible! As the Senior Instructor for Almaden Pilates, she has trained in the Polestar Method of Pilates. Most recently, she completed certification through the Polestar Reforming New York Pilates Company. It is both her intention and passion to share her learning with others. At Almaden Pilates in San Jose, CA, we specialize in both rehabilitative and core strengthening through Pilates mat classes.

Heynia Cooley is another one of our Pilates instructors here at America’s Best Karate. Pilates has been an integral part of Heynia’s life for over ten years. A once avid marathon runner, triathlete, and competitive tennis player, Heynia discovered Pilates as a means to support her training and to develop core strength, flexibility and proper body alignment. She found that Pilates was an essential component in keeping herself injury free and strong while training. She also used Pilates to bounce back into shape after having her third son. Heynia is trained and certified in the BASI Pilates format and truly enjoys working with a variety of clients including teens thru mature adults. Pilates continues to assist Heynia in a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, surfing, and running.
